Former Hearts and Kilmarnock star Jamie Hamill reckons Stranraer can fly under the radar in the Ladbrokes League 1 promotion chase if they can make Stair Park a fortress.

An opening day draw with the fancied Raith Rovers caught everyone’s attention as they prepare to take on Arbroath tomorrow.

Their opponents began the season with a 4-0 win over Montrose but Hamill reckons their rivals won’t fancy a trip to the south-west of Scotland.

Speaking exclusively to us, Hamill said: “We want to make Stair Park a tough place to come to. I think some players get fed up with the bus journey so we need to use that to our advantage.”

“We don’t want to make any team comfortable at our home ground so it’s up to us to make sure we make it as difficult as we can.

The 32-year-old made 244 appearances in the SPL and knows his club have what it takes to get out of the League One.

And he explained: “We’ve got some good young players who can make an impact this season.

“We just missed out on the play-offs last season by a couple of points so we need to have ambitions to do better than that.

There will be an onus on the boss Stephen Farrell – who’s in his first managerial position in the league – to shuffle the pack and keep everyone on their toes

Hamill said: “The manager has had a look at everyone and different formations in the pre-season matches and the League Cup games and while the results weren’t great I think the n matches were very useful.

“We’ve got a young squad so the onus will be on me to help them along and if can use my experience to help the boys out then I will be happy to do it.”

Stranraer are bidding to pick up their first three points of the campaign at Gayfield and are 16/5 to do so.
