Sir Keir Starmer raises hopes of UK Bank Holiday if England win Euro 2024
Published:
New Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has raised hopes of a UK Bank Holiday should England manage to beat Spain on Sunday night, winning Euro 2024 in the process.
After beating the Netherlands 2-1 in the semi-final on Wednesday evening, England book their place in back-to-back European Championship finals, hoping to go one further after the heartbreak of losing on penalties against Italy in 2021.
England now play Spain, who are arguably the in-form team of Euro 2024, with both nations now 90 minutes away from winning Europe's biggest international tournament.
Will there be a Bank Holiday if England win Euro 2024?
Starmer, who was voted in as Prime Minister last week, was asked about whether or not they'll be a Bank Holiday if England win the European Championship this summer.
The Labour Party leader didn't confirm that they'll be a Bank Holiday, stating that he didn't want to "jinx it". However, he did say that "we should certainly mark the occasion" if England are able to beat Spain.
Unfortunately for England, they aren't the favourites going into Sunday's game, with Spain odds-on to lift the trophy in Berlin.
The game is set to see Dani Carvajal and Robin Le Normand return to the starting XI for Spain, with Luke Shaw potentially in line for his first start of the tournament, as covered in a pre-game preview.
