Kenny Miller thinks TEN names could be coming in at Rangers this summer

Kenny Miller exclusively told Ladbrokes 1-2-Free:

  • "Philippe Clement made such an impact, initially, when he came to Rangers...I think you could go as far as to say he actually got them overperforming, to be honest."
  • "They did need to bring in attacking players who were going to come in, make a difference, and help soften the blow of losing Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent. Rangers never improved on those guys, in terms of their replacements."
  • "There's a lot of work to be done between now and the end of August, to put Rangers into a position where they're capable of challenging for the title. And that falls onto Philippe Clement's shoulders."
  • "No Rangers manager can afford to go long spells without beating Celtic. It's the nature of the beast of that job, and he'll be fully aware of that."
  • "The slight concern for me is that I can't remember a summer - and I'm talking about any team, by the way - where so many starting players have needed to be signed. It's not a good position to be in."
  • "I would imagine that by the end of August, as many as 10 players could have signed for the club. I'd be very surprised if the number is lower than that. And, of that 10, there could be six or seven who are going straight into the starting line-up..."

Philippe Clement actually got Rangers overperforming... but we're in for a huge summer ahead

Philippe Clement made such an impact, initially, when he came to Rangers. In terms of his man-management and motivation skills, he was getting the best out of everyone. By the way, he never really got an immediate improvement in performances on the pitch; the team were still playing in a similar way, but they were winning. And then they started building that momentum over the course of weeks and months. They started to look like a team again, which was something you just didn't see before his arrival. So, all of a sudden, they put themselves right back in the title race, and even got themselves into a position where they were actually ahead of Celtic, which was absolutely incredible, particularly with all of the injuries they had to deal with.

I think you could go as far as to say he actually got them overperforming, to be honest, which can happen. Sometimes, though, a result can throw you right back. And I think that the defeat against Motherwell had a really, really damaging effect on the team. Before that game, this was a team that was actually playing really well, and they'd got themselves into a position where they had the chance to go two points clear in the league. But what happened after that defeat, was that we then started seeing signs of the Rangers of five months or so prior. They were still winning games, but they weren't as convincing, performances weren't great, more games were in the balance. You then follow that Motherwell result up with defeat at Ross County, they dropped points at Dundee... the fact that they never beat Celtic, over the course of the season in five attempts. That was obviously a huge disappointment.

Listen, they fell short, but, like I said, I think the manager probably had them overperforming at points last season. In terms of where they're at now, this is a huge summer.

Rangers can't afford to have another summer like last year...

Rangers need to sign a lot of starting footballers in this transfer window. Look, it's not impossible, but it's certainly not the best recipe for success, when you're having to bring in a huge amount of important players who are going to come straight in and start for a title-challenging side. That's not a great position to be in. By the way, you can get it right, for sure. But Rangers need to get it right. They can't afford to have another summer like the one they had last year, in terms of the recruitment.

They didn't have to sign that many starters last summer, but they did need to bring in attacking players who were going to come in, make a difference, and help soften the blow of losing Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent. Rangers never improved on those guys, in terms of their replacements.

The right kind of recruitment is so important this summer... it looks like Oscar Cortes is going to be here again, which I'm quite happy about. They've signed Jefte, and Mohamed Diomande has been made permanent, so you can see where they're looking to prioritise.

But you might lose James Tavernier. And I know people will just say Dujon Sterling will replace him, and yes, he probably will. They probably won't sign a right-back to replace James, but Dujon is a completely different player.

I still think a new striker needs to be signed, and I still think a new wide player needs to come in. There's a lot of work to be done between now and the end of August, to put Rangers into a position where they're capable of challenging for the title. And that falls onto Philippe Clement's shoulders.

There's a worrying trend for Rangers managers, Clement needs to avoid it

I don't think Philippe Clement is under pressure. Rangers have changed their manager at almost identical stages of the last three seasons... three years ago, Steven Gerrard left in November to go to Aston Villa. Two seasons ago, Giovanni van Bronckhorst was sacked in November and Michael Beale came in. Then, last season, Michael Beale leaves in October and Clement comes in. That's around the spell where you're 10 or 12 games into the season, you might have dropped out of the Champions League and fallen into the Europa League... that's where the pressure first starts building in the season.

There'll always be an Old Firm game around that time of the season as well, and Philippe will be going into that period of the season, going into his fifth Old Firm game - which will be at Celtic Park - having drawn one and lost the other three, all of which came at big moments. No Rangers manager can afford to go long spells without beating Celtic. It's the nature of the beast of that job, and he'll be fully aware of that.

I don't believe he's under pressure, because I think Rangers need to get to a stage where there's a bit of stability and continuity, and I believe he's the right man for the job. But he needs to get this summer right, and he needs to start the season really, really well.

It takes a strong board, or chairman, or owner, particularly at a big club - and particularly in Glasgow - to weather a storm without making a change. You know, you have to be seeing something; you have to be seeing a reason not to make a change. In the last three seasons, Rangers have made changes at such a difficult period, just off the back of a transfer window, where a manager has been given the keys to the kingdom, and another manager has then had to come in and work with that squad.

I would imagine 10 players will arrive this summer... six or seven will be starters

Philippe's got to clean up the mistakes of last summer, while also being in a position where he can't afford to make mistakes himself. The slight concern for me is that I can't remember a summer - and I'm talking about any team, by the way - where so many starting players have needed to be signed. It's not a good position to be in. The other side of the coin though, is that maybe a clear-out was needed. It's so important that the people coming into the building are not only better players, but are the right types of players, with the right characteristics to deal with the pressure of playing for such a demanding club, where the expectations are so high.

And what happens now, having lost the league, and having lost the cup final, is that fans want things corrected straight away. You know, they want to be the team who are starting next season strong, and leading from the first game. There's a lot of work that needs to be done before we're at that point, in my opinion.

I would imagine that by the end of August, as many as 10 players could have signed for the club. I'd be very surprised if the number is lower than that. And, of that 10, there could be six or seven who are going straight into the starting line-up...

Don't get me wrong, there's always pressure at a club like Rangers, but I don't think Philippe Clement's job is under pressure at this moment in time. That being said, that can change quickly in Glasgow, particularly at that stage of the season, around October or November, where the league is taking shape and your European fate has been decided. Throw in an Old Firm fixture around that time, too, and as a manager you need to go out and show you've put together a team that's capable of competing with Celtic, because those fans will want that league title back at Ibrox.
