Ladbrokes SPFL: Hibs keep pressure on Rangers in title battle
Published:
We were back up and running this weekend in the Ladbrokes SPFL as the weather didn’t interfere and a full list of fixtures were played.
Hibernian hosted St Mirren knowing only a win would keep the pressure on table-topping Rangers, while in League 1 Dunfermline had a tricky trip to in-form Peterhead.
And down in League Two one team is now beginning to put a bit of daylight between themselves and the chasing pack.
Here’s your round-up of the weekend’s action…
Ladbrokes Championship
Sitting five points behind Rangers, Hibs knew only a win would do at home to St Mirren.
Liam Henderson put Alan Stubbs’ men ahead inside 10 minutes, before strikes from John McGinn and Anthony Stokes sealed a comfortable 3-1 win.
Livingston ended a run of three straight defeats with a 1-1 draw at home to Falkirk, while Raith and Dumbarton both arrested two-game losing streaks with a 0-0 stalemate at Stark’s Park.
Alloa couldn’t build on their victory last time out however as they lost to Queen of the South, who picked up a second successive victory to move level with Raith in the battle for fourth.
Ladbrokes League 1
The game of the weekend between Peterhead and Dunfermline failed somewhat to live up to expectations.
The hosts had won four on the spin while the Sons had won five straight, but ultimately neither could find a breakthrough in a 0-0 draw.
That result allowed Ayr to close the gap at the top to seven points as they ran out 3-1 victors over Albion.
Stenhousemuir extended Forfar’s winless run with a 1-0 success at Station Park, while two second-half goals saw Stranraer win 2-0 at Cowdenbeath for a third victory in four games.
Brechin and Airdrie played out a thriller at Glebe Park with the hosts coming from 3-1 down at half-time to snatch a point in a 3-3 draw.
Ladbrokes League 2
Elgin extended their lead at the top of League 2 to five points with a 1-0 win over a resolute Berwick, who had Jonathan Fairbairn sent off early in the second half.
The result was Elgin’s fourth-straight win, while second-placed Queens Park were held to a 0-0 draw at Stirling Albion.
East Fife are now only below Queens on goal difference after a 3-1 win over bottom side East Stirling.
An own goal from player-manager Gary Naysmith put the hosts ahead early on at Ochilview Park, but goals from Kyle Wilkie and Nathan Austin had the Fifers infront by half-time before Alistair Coote sealed the win late on.
Montrose continued their upswing in form with a 2-1 win at home to Clyde, while former league leaders Annan slumped to a fourth defeat in a row after a 2-1 loss at Arbroath.
