Liverpool enter crisis with silverware looking very unlikely

With Rafa Benitez’s comments still ringing in Liverpool fans ears, the last thing the Kop end wanted to see was a defeat to League Two side Northampton.

Benitez was highly critical of the Liverpool hierarchy earlier in the week, and the future is looking bleak for the club as they lie 17th with just the one win in the Premier League.

Roy Hodgson has a tough job on his hands turning around a club in fast decline and the 3/1 available for Liverpool to finish in the top four doesn’t scream value.

After the exit in the Carling Cup, Liverpool can only mount a serious challenge for the Europa League, 8/1 to win, and the FA Cup, also 8/1 to win.

But with Roy Hodgson playing under strength sides in the Europa League thus far, it seems as if his main target is to bring the club out of the rut they’re sliding into.

A Premier League challenge is unlikely which would leave Liverpool fans dreaming of a visit to Wembley in May in order to secure some silverware this season.

Hodgson issued an apology to the Liverpool fans after their defeat to Northampton, “I can only congratulate Northampton and apologise to the fans who came here tonight.”

The Cobblers caused the upset of the Carling Cup third round and will have to continue to do so if they are to defy their odds of 150/1 in the Carling Cup betting market.

Liverpool face a home tie with Sunderland on Saturday and it’s turned into a must-win game as Hodgson looks to ease the pressure mounting on him.

But Sunderland are a huge price at 6/1 considering Liverpool’s recent form and with Torres yet to find his feet this season, it’s worth staying away from the 1/2 for Liverpool to win.

Roy Hodgson would take the draw if offered now and that’s 3/1. See the full Barclays Premier League betting markets here.
