Liverpool look at former Man City striker as 7th summer signing

There’s been a bit of a precession at Liverpool since Luis Suarez was sold to Barcelona for £75m earlier in the summer and it doesn’t seem like the Merseyside club are quite finished spending the money they received from the deal.

Brendan Rodgers is moving, at pace, towards emulating Tottenham’s Gareth Bale-funded recruitment drive of 12 months ago having signed six new players on the back of selling the bite-happy Uruguayan.

A seventh new arrival isn’t off the cards either, with the Reds reportedly on the cusp of bidding £4m for former Manchester City striker Mario Balotelli.

The Italian’s AC Milan departure has long been speculated over since the end of last season, but it was thought Liverpool’s Premier League rivals Arsenal were in the driving seat to capture the forward earlier in the window.

As nothing has materialised, Rodgers now looks primed to make the problematic goal-getter his latest acquisition to the Anfield club’s title push, currently rated as a 10/1 possibility with Ladbrokes.

Replacing Suarez’s 31 league goals of last term is going to an almighty challenge for Rodgers and has so far only signed Rickie Lambert as an out-and-out front man to try and fill the former Ajax striker’s shoes.

While Lambert is a good player, he’ll certainly need a hand picking up the slack left by Suarez’s departure and Rodgers eyes Balotelli as the perfect man for to do that.

Rodgers is a public fan of the young Italian and claimed he was looking into buying the former Inter Milan man way back when he swapped Serie A for the Premier League in 2010.

“Balotelli has all the qualities [I like],” Rodgers said. “He’s 6ft 3″, he’s quick, his touch is terrific, he can score goals and he’s still so young.”
