Chelsea v Liverpool betting tips and odds

Tuesday’s clash between these Premier League heavyweights has taken on added significance with Chelsea’s decision to dismiss manager Graham Potter on Sunday.

Saturday’s defeat by Aston Villa saw the big-spending Blues drop into the bottom half of the table, although they are just four points behind the Reds, who lost 4-1 at Manchester City on Saturday.

With both teams struggling to finish in the four, we look at some of the talking points and odds in our Chelsea v Liverpool betting tips.

Potter no longer at the wheel

Potter accepted Chelsea needed to “dust themselves down and go again for Tuesday” following the 2-0 loss to Villa at Stamford Bridge, but unfortunately the former Brighton boss has bitten the dust and won’t be sitting in the dug-out.

His place has been taken on a temporary basis by Bruno Saltor, but whether he is in charge for Saturday’s trip to Wolves and Wednesday’s Champions League clash with holders Real Madrid is open to question.

Chelsea had 27 shots against Villa, eight of which were on target, but still failed to find the net as questions continue to be asked about why they did not recruit a goalscorer in January instead of a glut of midfielders and defenders.

There is nothing to choose between the two teams for Tuesday’s game which sees the Blues priced at 6/4 and the Reds 17/10, but the most likely outcome seems a draw at 12/5 as the first of our Chelsea v Liverpool betting tips.

The last five meetings between these clubs have ended all square after 90 minutes, including both of last season’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup finals which finished goalless.

January’s 0-0 draw at Anfield made it three successive goalless draws involving these sides and another can be backed at 11/1, while it’s 7/2 on a point apiece and under 2.5 goals.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp cut a disconsolate figure after the heavy defeat at the Etihad where City midfielder Rodri was perhaps lucky to escape a second yellow card, although the German admitted: “I am not sure we would have won today against 10 men to be honest.

“Again we conceded two quick goals and then it is super difficult if not near impossible to come back from a two-goal deficit here. But we can make it more difficult for them if you stick to the things you did in your good moments and that was not there any more and that’s why the difference was so massive. Wow.”

Klopp admitted that his past achievements with the club explain why he is probably still in a job at Anfield after answering questions about the dismissals of Potter and Leicester’s Brendan Rodgers – the 13th managerial exits in the top flight this season.

Although Chelsea realistically only have the Champions League to play for, a top-four finish is still in reach of the Reds, who are 3/1 to be playing in Europe’s premier club competition next season.

They have generally struggled to breach the Blues’ defence in the last two campaigs, with all of the last five meetings level at the break which can be backed at 11/10, while a goalless opening 45 minutes is 15/8, although Draw HT/Draw FT catches the eye at 17/4.

Only Crystal Palace have been level at the break more often that Chelsea’s 15 this season and nine of their 14 games at Stamford Bridge were even.

Liverpool have only been leading three times at the interval on the road this season and have only won away from home on three occasions, so their away form leaves a lot to be desired.

For those looking at bigger odds Chelsea leading at half-time and failing to win can be backed at 9/1, the same price as Liverpool in the same market. Both seem appealing!

Finally, we like the look of Ben Chilwell to get on the scoresheet at any time at 13/2 as the last of our Chelsea v Liverpool betting tips.

The England defender had an effort ruled out for a push and also struck the post during a relentless spell of pressure.
The left-back recently scored against his former club Leicester and he has a knack of turning up at the far post, so looks good value to get on the scoresheet.
