Manchester United transfer news and rumours

Erik ten Hag declared himself happy with Manchester United’s summer transfer window which saw plenty of comings and goings at Old Trafford.

United spent more than £160m in bringing in three high-profile signings, but also parted company with a handful of others, including goalkeeper David de Gea, one of 13 players to leave the club.

Ten Hag said: “I think we have done good business, we constructed a strong squad and we are ready to go into the fight.”

After a busy summer of Manchester United transfer news and rumours, we look back at all the ins and outs during the window.

Who signed for Manchester United?

Rasmus Hojlund (Atalanta)

United had been linked with prolific Tottenham striker Harry Kane for the last two years, but when the England captain made a move to perennial Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich, the Red Devils swooped for Atalanta striker Hojlund at the start of August in a £64m deal which could rise to £72m.

Boyhood United fan Hojlund began his career at hometown club FC Copenhagen, before spells with Austrian side Sturm Graz and Italian team Atalanta.

The 20-year-old forward scored nine goals in Serie A last season, as well as six in as many appearances for the Denmark national team.

Standing over 6ft tall, Hojlund is a classic penalty-area poacher with an explosive left foot and searing pace. His boss at Atalanta, Gian Piero Gasperini, claims the striker can run 100 metres in under 11 seconds.

Ten Hag said: “We expect a huge impact but also he needs time to settle into the team, to settle into the way of play. The rest will come. I’m very convinced of that.”

Mason Mount (Chelsea)

Manchester United finally made their first signing of the summer by landing England international Mount on a five-year contract for an initial £55m.

The 24-year-old midfielder came through the ranks at Chelsea and made 129 Premier League appearances for them, scoring 27 goals and providing 22 assists.

Mount, a Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2021, said in a statement from United: “It’s never easy leaving the club where you grew up, but Manchester United will provide an exciting new challenge for the next phase of my career.

“Everyone can see that the club has made big steps forward under (United boss) Erik ten Hag. Having met with the manager and discussed his plans, I couldn’t be more excited for the seasons ahead, and am ready for the hard work expected here.”

Andre Onana (Inter Milan)

United signed goalkeeper Onana from Inter Milan on a five-year contract for around £44m, plus add-ons, as a replacement for the long-serving David De Gea, who left the club after falling out of contract.

Onana worked with Ten Hag at Ajax, having spent time in Barcelona’s academy before he established himself at the Eredivisie outfit.

After a successful six years in the Netherlands, where he won three league titles, the shot-stopper signed for Inter in 2022.

During his solitary season in Italy, Onana helped Inter reach the Champions League final and win the Coppa Italia.

He said: “To join Manchester United is an incredible honour and I have worked hard all my life to get to this moment, overcoming many obstacles along the way.

“Walking out at Old Trafford to defend our goal and contribute to the team will be another amazing experience. This is the start of a new journey for me, with new teammates and new ambitions to fight for.

“Manchester United has a long history of incredible goalkeepers, and I will now give everything to create my own legacy in the coming years.”

Jonny Evans (free transfer)

Eight years after leaving the club, Evans returned to Manchester United to provide defensive cover on a deal until the end of the season.

The 35-year-old centre-back spent the last five seasons with Leicester, but became a free agent upon leaving the club when they were relegated from the Premier League.

Evans had been training with United and played for them in pre-season before being offered a one-year deal.

The Northern Ireland international won three Premier League titles and the Champions League under Sir Alex Ferguson, but after loan spells with Royal Antwerp and Sunderland, joined West Brom where he spent three seasons before moving to Leicester.

He said: “I am delighted to join Manchester United, a place which has always felt like home. This club and the fans have shaped me as a player and as a person since I was 15 years old, and I am delighted to be back where it all began as part of this talented squad.”

Sofyan Amrabat (Fiorentina – loan)

Morocco international Amrabat reunited with Ten Hag on transfer deadline day following a loan move from Fiorentina.

One of the best players of the winter World Cup in Qatar, Amrabat has been brought in to bolster United’s midfield.

United have paid an £8.6million loan fee but have an option to make the deal permanent for £17.1m plus £4.2m in add-ons.

Amrabat came through Utrecht’s academy to play 50 times for the senior side during Ten Hag’s spell in charge between 2015 and 2017.

He told the club’s website:  “It was very important because I was very young. I was 18, 19 years old and he gave me the chance to play in the first team with Utrecht. We had a fantastic time, a really good season. I learned a lot from him so maybe he’s one of the most important people in my career for now.

“It’s fantastic because I think Erik ten Hag is a coach who will push always to the limit. He’s hungry. He wants to win. He’s a winner and I like that. I think I’m also similar, I’m also a winner. I want to win every day so it’s a good match.”

Sergio Reguilon (Tottenham – loan)

Injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia forced United’s hand into signing Tottenham left-back Reguilon on a season-long loan.

The 26-year-old Spaniard spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid.

Reguilon said: “I know I can contribute to Manchester United this season. I am ready to fight for this group and show everyone my qualities. In life you have to be ready for everything and the chance to represent this great club with such an illustrious history is one that I could not turn down.

“Having spoken to the manager, I know what he needs from me, and I am ready to play my part in helping the team to achieve success.”

Who left Manchester United?

David de Gea

The Spaniard left Manchester United as a free agent after 12 seasons at Old Trafford.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper’s contract with United expired at the end of June, with no new deal agreed despite talks that took place throughout the season.

In a message on social media, De Gea thanked United fans for their support, but said: “Now, it’s the right time to undertake a new challenge, to push myself again in new surroundings.”

Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace – £15m)

The 26-year-old goalkeeper had been expected to complete a permanent move to Nottingham Forest, but joined Crystal Palace instead on a five-year contract on transfer deadline day.

Henderson joined United as a 14-year-old and impressed on his first loan spell with Sheffield United during the 2018-19 season, winning the Golden Glove in the Championship during their promotion-winning season.

He featured on loan for the Blades the following year in the Premier League and spent last season on loan at the City Ground.

Anthony Elanga (Nottingham Forest – undisclosed)

Elanga joined Nottingham Forest on a five-year deal for a reported £15million

The 21-year-old Sweden international, who made 55 appearances in all competitions for United, told Forest’s official website: £It’s a pleasure to be here. It’s a proud moment, not only for me, but for my family as well. It’s the perfect next step for me in my career, it’s a big step and I’m really looking forward to playing in front of the Forest fans at The City Ground. I had interest from elsewhere, but for me, Nottingham Forest feels like the perfect place.”

Elanga joined United’s youth set-up in 2014 and went on to make 39 Premier League appearances, including 21 starts, scoring three goals.

He has netted three times in 12 senior appearances for Sweden since making his debut in March 2022.

Mason Greenwood (Getafe – loan)

Greenwood has joined Spanish club Getafe on loan in a move that Manchester United say will allow the player to rebuild his career away from Old Trafford.

Greenwood was suspended by United on January 30, 2022 over allegations relating to a young woman after images and videos were posted online.

The 21-year-old faced charges including attempted rape and assault, but the Crown Prosecution Service announced in February that the case had been discontinued.

The academy graduate scored 35 goals in 129 matches for United, with his last appearance coming against West Ham on January 22, 2022.

Alex Telles (Al Nassr – undisclosed)

The Brazil defender reunited with former United colleague Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League for an undisclosed fee.

The left-back joined the Red Devils from Porto in 2020 for around £14m and went on to make 50 appearances but spent last season on loan at Sevilla.
