McGladrey Classic: Former Fed-Ex champ Haas can start with win
Published:It’s early days in the new PGA Tour season and for some, such as American Bill Haas, there is hope that impressive late-season form will translate into a big result on their 2015 debut.
The McGladrey Classic is certainly a good way for many PGA Tour card holders to ease their way into the fresh tournament calendar.
The 7,005-yard track at the Sea Island Resort Course in Saint Simons Island, Georgia, has consistently ranked as the easiest Par 70 the stateside tour has to offer since it first became a fixture back in 2010.
That was 16/1-shot Haas’ sole appearance at this resort-based event and on that occasion the man who just finished 16th overall in the 2014 FedExCup standings after another fine season, tied for second.
Having built up a head of steam in the closing tournaments of last season, where tying for second at the Wyndham proved the catalyst for five finishes no worse than T16, it’s little surprise to see Haas among the market leaders.
Last season was the first in four where the 2011 FedExCup champion failed to win a PGA Tour title and given his previous effort at the McGladrey he’s got a great shot at ending his mini drought early doors in ‘2015’.
Outside of Haas, McGladrey’s defending champion Chris Kirk also at 16s, boasts bet-worthy form carried over as he too opens his season’s account.
Kirk – who many thought had done enough to earn wildcard Ryder Cup status – ranks third in the PGA Power Rankings for this event, finishing last season by winning the Deutsche Bank before tying for fourth at the Tour Championships to wrap things up.
