McIlroy still a cracking price to be GB & Ireland’s top point scorer

The United States may be favourites for this weekend’s 41st Ryder Cup at Hazeltine, but the recent form of Rory McIlroy will have USA captain Davis Love III rightly concerned.
Holyrood native McIlroy heads up Darren Clarke’s European team on the back of a thrilling success at the FedEx Cup.
The 27-year-old prevailed in a three-man play-off last weekend, to claim his second big win of the month.
McIlroy had already won the Deutsche Bank Championship, and after something of a blank in the summer – missed cuts at the US Open and PGA Championship – is hitting peak form just in time to create some Ryder Cup magic.
The Northern Irishman has freely stated that missing the cut at Baltusrol was the catalyst for a change in form, and it’s 7/4 McIlroy is GB & Ireland’s top point scorer.
With four GB & Ireland rookies in the mix, only Justin Rose and Lee Westwood join Rory in boasting previous Ryder Cup experience, and of those three, it’s McIlroy who is the form man.
Rose bests McIlroy’s tournament record with his 9-3-2 versus Rory’s 6-4-4, and some may find value in backing the Olympic champion in this market at 6/1.
But with no top ten for Rose in a PGA Tournament since Wells Fargo back in May, the Englishman can’t call upon form like McIlroy can.
McIlroy also leads the betting to be Europe’s top point scorer at 7/2, although Henrik Stenson and Sergio Garcia may have something to say about that at 11/2 and 6/1 respectively.
But having turned a corner since that PGA nadir and clearly happy with his game right now, this weekend McIlroy is set to be admired by viewers, feared by the Americans, and backed by many.
