Newcastle United look to Ligue 1 forward as Remy exit looms

Newcastle United look set to step up their efforts to secure a new goalscorer this summer amid reports linking Loic Remy with a move back to London.

The Magpies are long-time admirers of Marseille man Andre-Pierre Gignac, having previously expressed an interest in bringing the forward to St James’s Park last summer, only to have their enquiries rebuffed by both the player and the club.

But with money to spend and a gaping hole in their frontline reinforcements, Newcastle could make another approach for the France international, with L’OM struggling in the league at present, having already parted company with manager Elie Baup.

Marseille are currently sixth in Ligue 1, having gone on a run of four games without a win and look unlikely to achieve Champions League qualification this term, something that could lead to a fire sale of some of their biggest names.

As one of the highest earners at the club Gignac certainly fits the bill and having notched up a credible 19 goals in 35 goals for the French giants.

Newcastle are likely to face stiff competition in their pursuit of the player though, with clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal both on the lookout for a striker this summer, though neither has yet to express an interest in the 28-year-old.

Any move could ultimately hinge on the future of Loic Remy, who could be tempted into a return to London, with Tottenham leading the list of potential suitors.

It could also depend on the form of loan signing Luuk De Jong, who has endured an up-and-down start to his career at Newcastle and has yet to score for the Toon despite featuring seven times for the north-east club.

Should De Jong rediscover the kind of form that made the 23-year-old hot property back in his younger days at Ajax then Newcastle may look to land the player on a permanent deal come the end of the season.

The Toon are in action at home to Everton this week, with the Magpies 21/10 to claim a win, with the draw priced at 12/5 and the Toffees 5/4 favourites for victory.

It looks like it could be now or never for De Jong.
