Next Match of the Day permanent host odds

There's been another major shake-up in the race to replace Gary Lineker as Match of the Day's permanent host next season, according to the latest odds from Ladbrokes.

Lineker is set to step down from his role as Match of the Day host after 25 years at the end of the season in May 2025, with the BBC set to appoint a new permanent anchor for the show in due course.

Mark Chapman was the early favourite with the bookies, but quite quickly lost his spot to Alex Scott. However, the tables have turned once again...

After being ousted as the favourite with the bookies to become the next Match of the Day host, Chapman is back as the front-runner, with odds of 2/1.

Scott's odds have increased to 4/1, but she's still considered to be firmly in the running to take over from Lineker and host the iconic BBC show from the beginning of next season.

Nicola McReady of Ladbrokes said: "There has been another shake-up in the race to replace Gary Lineker, with Mark Chapman taking control again. Given how volatile the market has been, a flip-flop in the odds could easily happen again."

Scott and Chapman aren't the only names being backed however, with Sky Sports presenters David Jones and Kelly Cates entering the picture with odds of 16/1 and 5/1 respectively.

It’s good news for Gabby Logan too, with the esteemed presenter's price being slashed from 16/1 to just 5/2 as we head into the final weeks of 2024.

Considered outsiders in the race Alan Shearer, Micah Richards and Gary Neville, with the trio being priced between 25/1 and 33/1 to take over from Linekar if the BBC opts to go down the ex-player route.

This is the first time this century that the BBC has been in the market for a new Match of the Day host, with Lineker taking over from Des Lynam in 1999.
