Oppose Serena Williams at WTA Finals with big-priced duo
Published:Eight of the world’s best women’s tennis players arrive in Singapore looking to claim the tour’s year-end tournament and a $2m first prize.
For two of the competitors, Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova, there’s the added incentive of claiming the number one ranking spot, which the Russian can secure if she wins the title at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
As ever it’s Williams who tops the betting at 6/4 to claim that title, thanks to her stance as the two-time defending champion with a dominating record over her opponents (which stands at a collective 49-4).
However, considering the 33-year-old pulled out of her last tournament appearance with injury concerns there has never been a better time to back against the bookies’ favourite player.
In fact, all of Williams’ opponents during the group-based qualification stage are carrying fitness niggles, with Simona Halep, Eugenie Bouchard and Ana Ivanovic also all leaving their last appearance early with injury.
On that basis, looking to the White Group – made up of Sharapova, Petra Kvitova and Caroline Wozniacki – is a far more sensible strategy when picking the tournament winner, with the form of Wimbledon champ Kvitova particularly appealing.
The 24-year-old Czech, a pleasing 3/1 shot for Singapore victory, has won 24 of her 28 matches since the end of the French Open and has claimed two event wins along with her SW19 success in that time.
At an even longer price, as an each-way punt, Wozniacki (12/1) can be backed with some confidence. The Dane is the only player in the field not to have lost to a group opponent in the calendar year and has enjoyed a relative return to form having claimed one title on tour and two silver medals in 2014.
