The second Major of 2025 is underway as golfers take to Quail Hollow Club to compete for the PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy has made a difficult start to his quest for back-to-back Majors titles after his memorable Masters triumph, ending day one three over par.

The Northern Irishman, who is the favourite to win the Sports Personality of the Year, was neck and neck with world No1 Scottie Scheffler in the running before the tournament, with the American leading starting day one strongly alongside Ryder Cup captain Luke Donald.

After his memorable triumph at the Masters, many expected McIlroy to kick on and have another strong Major at Quail Hollow.

But it has not gone the Northern Irishman's way so far after a series of errors saw him end the day on 74 - three over par.

Things are looking much more positive for his Ryder Cup captain Donald, who rolled back the years go within three shots of the lead after day one.

The 47-year-old hit a bogey-free 67 to stay in touch with early leader Jhonattan Vegas but the Englishman remains and huge outsider in the outright winner odds.

World No1 Scheffler produced a strong finish to keep in touch with the leaders on a two-under 69, with fellow contender Bryson DeChambeau stuttering to a level-par 71.

Xander Shauffele, who won the title in 2024, joined McIlroy as another notable player to struggle on day one, finishing one-over on 72.

Despite Vegas' extraordinary shock lead, Scheffler is now the favourite to claim his first title of 2025.
