The quickest yellow cards in Premier League history

Published:

Ladbrokes ranks the quickest yellow cards in Premier League history, taking a look at which players were keen to make their mark on a game immediately.

From flying tackles to overexcited substitutes to time-wasters, here are the fastest yellow cards in Premier League history, including a new record set this season.

The 10 quickest yellow cards in Premier League history

10. Lee Cattermole, 40 seconds, Sunderland vs Newcastle (2012)

Surprisingly, this is Lee Cattermole's only entry on this list. Unsurprisingly, it took place in the Tyne-Wear Derby. The midfield terrier cleaned out Cheick Tiote just 40 seconds into this affair, and got sent off after full-time for good measure. Could we be seeing more derbies in the North East soon?

9. Aleksandar Mitrovic, 3 seconds*, Newcastle vs Southampton (2015)

Both North East clubs get their entries in early. After coming on as a sub for his Newcastle debut, the ball had been in play for just 3 seconds before Mitrovic lunged in on Matt Targett near the sideline. Technically, Mitro could be top of this list, but we ordered it based on the quickest cards from kick-off.

8. Anthony Knockaert, 28 seconds, Brighton vs Crystal Palace (2019)

Some might be dismissive of how fierce a rivalry there is between Brighton and Palace, but Anthony Knockaert certainly wasn't. The French winger was booked inside 30 seconds for a strong challenge on Palace skipper Luka Milivojevic, arguably lucky to escape a red. To add insult to injury for the Eagles, Knockaert curled in a sensational winner late on.

7. Dara O'Shea, 27 seconds, Burnley vs Bournemouth (2024)

A truly bizarre, rare booking here - for timewasting after 27 seconds. With Dominic Solanke preparing to take an early throw-in for Bournemouth, Dara O'Shea inexplicably jumped and headed the ball out of his hands. The referee duly booked him, and Burnley lost 2-0 anyway.

6. Stephen Warnock, 26 seconds, Blackburn vs Hull (2009)

Left-back Warnock, who ironically now appears on Sky Sports' 'Ref Watch' show, made history by receiving the quickest yellow card in Premier League history for a crunching tackle after 26 seconds against Hull City in 2009.

5. Liam Cooper, 25 seconds, Leeds vs West Brom (2021)

The former Leeds United captain played a key role in Marcelo Bielsa's team that won promotion from the Championship and finished 9th on their return to the Premier League. The Scotland international was a bit too eager in this clash with West Brom, earning himself a yellow after 25 seconds for a full-blooded challenge.

4. Scott McTominay, 24 seconds, Man Utd vs Newcastle (2019)

It's easy to forget Scott McTominay has been a workmanlike midfielder for most of his career, as he is on the brink of winning Serie A and writing himself into Napoli immortality. In fact, McTominay has held a title before - when Kevin Friend booked him after 24 seconds for taking out Sean Longstaff, it was the fastest booking since Opta recorded that data.

3. Jamie Carragher, 20 seconds, Liverpool vs Aston Villa (1997)

This one happened before Opta started recording exact time data, but approximately 20 seconds into his Liverpool debut, Jamie Carragher received a booking for a nasty tackle on Villa midfielder Andy Townsend. It wasn't all bad for Carra, because he ended up scoring on his debut too.

2. Sadio Mane, 15 seconds, Liverpool vs Chelsea (2022)

Ex-Liverpool winger Sadio Mane has a catalogue of great moments during his time on Merseyside, with a plethora of goals and titles. Less remembered will be this yellow card he received just 15 seconds into a grudge match against Chelsea, for a naughty elbow on Cesar Azpilicueta. The Senegalese forward opened the scoring 9 minutes later.

1. Yves Bissouma, 14 seconds, Tottenham vs Man City (2024)

Drumroll please..... the new holder of the dubious record for quickest yellow card in Premier League history is Spurs midfielder Yves Bissouma, who broke Mane's time by one second in November against Manchester City. Before Tottenham had even touched the ball, Bissouma had gone flying into Phil Foden to secure the crown.

Who'd have thought that's how Spurs would end their trophy drought?

Honourable mentions

Myles Lewis-Skelly has made plenty of headlines this season, with the 18-year-old putting in some superb performances but also having a few disciplinary issues. However, it is some achievement to receive your first yellow card before your first senior league minutes for Arsenal, as Lewis-Skelly did against Manchester City in September.

What would this list be without Vinnie Jones? It might not qualify for our Premier League top 10, but in 1992 the Wimbledon hard man got booked after just 5 seconds of play! Talk about an immediate impact.
