Have your say: Is Rooney’s volley the best ever goal against Newcastle?
Published:
Manchester United take on Newcastle at St James’ Park tonight and in-form-again Wayne Rooney travels to the north-east with his memorable strike against the Magpies clear in his mind.
Rooney’s top corner smash will go down as one of his best ever, but is it the most spectacular goal scored against the Toon in the Premier League era?
We’ve dug up five absolute screamers scored against the Magpies over the years and here we give you your chance to vote for your favourite.
Wayne Rooney – Manchester United
What this clip doesn’t show is that just seconds before latching on to this blistering volley, Rooney wasn’t really paying much attention to the game but was instead arguing with referee Neale Barry.
He put all his fury and aggression in the strike and it showed as Shay Given was given no chance at his near post.
Matt Le Tissier – Southampton
Despite being scored way back in 1993 this Le Tiss goal is so good it still feels fresh in the mind.
The Southampton legend starts off his solo move with a backheel flick and it only gets better from there…
Leighton Baines – Everton
Much like Manchester United, Everton found themselves 1-0 down to the Magpies before magic struck.
From all of 40 yards Baines struck perhaps the sweetest of free-kicks you’ll ever see and the ball continues to gather pace right up until it struck the back of Tim Krul’s net.
Dennis Bergkamp – Arsenal
Arguably one of the best Premier League goals of all time Bergkamp’s footwork and turn to score in this 2-0 win over Newcastle needs to be watched a couple fo times before you can figure out what’s happened – imagine how poor Nikos Dabizas must’ve felt!
Luis Suarez – Liverpool
Suarez made this chest, take it round the keeper and tap in combo look so easy that you may not appreciate it on first glance. But the ability to pluck a long ball from the air like this and leave two players chasing shadows is truly remarkable.
Let us know which if these brilliant goals you think is the best by voting in the poll below.
