Spurs and Leicester in three Champions League plots to watch

Published:

1) A chance for Tottenham to bounce back

The so-called Wembley curse continued as Spurs opened their Champions League campaign at the national stadium, losing 2-1 to Monaco in front of a record-setting crowd.

They make the long trip to Russia to face CSKA Moscow for their second match in Group E. That would normally be a tough assignment for clubs from any other country, but the Koni have a particular weakness against English opposition.

Each of their last four home games against teams from these shores have failed to produce a win for the hosts, with their last victory coming against Aston Villa in the 2008/09 Uefa Cup.

Spurs are 13/10 to win.

2) Real Madrid’s Champions League bogey team

A 2-2 draw against Las Palmas in La Liga last time out meant Real Madrid had dropped points in their last two league games, and things could get worse when they travel to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

The German outfit are looking for their fourth straight home win against Los Blancos when they welcome Zinedine Zidane’s side to Westfalenstadion, and have not lost a single game against the Spanish giants in five games there.

We go 7/5 about a Der BVB victory on this occasion.

3) Leicester’s first crack at Champions League hosting duties

It’s been a bit of a mixed bag for Leicester since crowning their European debut with victory over Club Brugge.

A 3-0 win over Burnley kept the good times rolling, but the defending Premier League champions have since conceded four goals to Chelsea (albeit after extra time in the EFL Cup) and Manchester United in consecutive outings.

Porto are their next opponents in Europe and, as boost to the Foxes’ spirits, are still looking for their first win in England in their 17th trip.
