Super League team guide: Campese experience to benefit KR
Published:
Team Name: Hull Kingston Rovers
Nickname: The Robins
Ground: KC Lightstream Stadium (Craven Park)
Famous Fans: John Prescott
Super League Wins: None
Last Season: 9th
New Signings: Darrell Goulding (Wigan), Ken Sio, Mitchell Allgood (both Parramatta Eels), Josh Mantellato (Newcastle Knights), James Donaldson (Bradford), Kieran Dixon (London Broncos), Kevin Larroyer (Catalans), Tyrone McCarthy (Northern Pride), Albert Kelly, Maurice Blair (both Gold Coast Tigers), John Boudebza (Lezignan Corbieres), Ryan Bailey (Leeds Rhinos) and Terry Campese (Canberra Raiders)
Head Coach: Chris Chester
A 2005 Challenge Cup winner with Hull FC, Chester cut his coaching teeth at Castleford Tigers and worked under Craig Sandercock at Craven Park before being handed the reins for this season.
A 40-0 January whooping at the hands of Warrington indicates that Chester is in for a tough season and with the new Super 8s format meaning a quick start is essential the learning curve is going to have to be a steep one.
Star Man: Terry Campese
The loss of Josh Hodgson, who weighed in with 11 tries, 11 assists and 909 tackles last year, was a big blow for the Robins but the arrival of Terry Campese has lifted some of the gloom.
The name Campese may be synonymous with Rugby Union but Terry – nephew of Australia legend David – is doing his utmost to cement the legacy across two codes.
His experience could prove vital as KR attempt to avoid the bottom four in the new Super 8’s format.
