Take advantage of enhanced Ennis price for SPOTY
Published:With the world ready for the last repetitive date that will ever be seen now we have reached December 12th 2012, Ladbrokes have conjured up some 12/1 specials to mark the occasion, with the obvious stand-out being Jessica Ennis being named BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
The SPOTY market has been topsy-turvy in the last few months since the Olympics, with the big developments being solid recent money for Ennis and Bradley Wiggins, with Andy Murray the clear drifter.
Murray was 5/2 to claim the accolade directly after beating Novak Djokovic in the final of the US Open to add to Olympic gold, but he is friendless at 16/1.
In the same period, Wiggins has been backed into 3/10 from 11/10 and becoming the first Brit to win the Tour De France remains a sensational achievement.
But in a year where British sport has had such a number of heroes, this price is now far too short.
Ennis has come in from 12/1 to 7/1, but the original price has been reinstated to mark the landmark date in the calendar.
Although winning a single gold at the Olympics does not match the achievements of her leading rivals, this award not totally settled by whose accomplishments are best.
Given that the award is determined by a public vote, it is hard to argue against Ennis is the most loved of the contenders.
She was the poster girl of the Olympics and was on numerous billboards all over London. Ennis must have been under more pressure than any other athlete at the Games.
Furthermore, she was the heavy favourite to win the heptathlon despite having been beaten at the World Championships in 2011 by Tatyana Chernova and then losing the indoor title in early 2012 to Nataliya Dobrynska.
Therefore, winning was by no means a certainly, but Ennis delivered under the most intense of pressure and sparked the surge of golds that followed on that famous evening with Greg Rutherford and Mo Farah.
