The Safety Net: Sharapova appeals as a very tempting US Open bet
Published:The Safety Net target was wrapped up within 20 minutes yesterday as the Spanish under-21 side swamped to a 7-2 success over Georgia under-21.
Goals from Isco (a brace) and Rodri put Spain 3-0 up inside 21 minutes and Rodri had completed his hat-trick by the time the 30th minute had come around.
At half-time Spain were 6-0 up and the Safety Net was rubbing its hands at another £20 in the bank.
The bank now stands at £449 and today we’re focusing on the women’s draw at the US Open to land us our £20 target today.
Maria Sharapova, the 7/2 second favourite to lift the title, faces Italian Flavia Pennetta today and at 1/4, were picking Sharapova as our bet of the day.
The two have met three times and Pennetta did manage to defeat Sharapova in one of those games – a hard court tournament in Los Angeles back in 2009 – but the form of the Russian should be too strong for the Italian.
Sharapova comes into the US Open on the back of a WTA success in Cincinnati and while the world number four was given a scare by Heather Watson in the first round, she was also given a scare by Watson’s compatriot Laura Robson in the second round of Wimbledon yet went on to the final.
Pennetta has dropped just eight games in her opening two matches but both of those matches were against the world numbers 86 and 131, and this match against Sharapova is a much tougher task.
There is a chance this match will go three sets but we’re confident that Sharapova can confirm her status as second favourite and advance in to the fourth round.
At 1/4 to win, we’ll be staking £80 on Sharapova beating Pennetta today to hit our £20 target.
