Tiger, Rory and Vijay provide 3 best PGA Championship wins
Published:The fourth and final golf major is just around the corner and to get punters in the mood, here at News.Ladbrokes we’ve taken a stroll down nostalgia avenue to relive the best PGA Championship moments.
While this could easily have been an ode to the legendary Jack Nicklaus, the record five-time winner of the PGA’s flagship event we’ve landed this side of the Millennium with all three of our favourite wins.
A special mention to Irishman Padraig Harrington who’s 2008 triumph from three shots back after 54 holes to win by two clear at Oakland Hills, was a very close fourth.
3. Tiger Woods in 2000
Having won the previous season, golf’s new sensation was to claim his fifth of 14 majors by shooting the lowest overall below par score in the tournament’s history at -18.
However, what made this extra special was that Woods didn’t have it all his own way at Valhalla as little-fancied Bob May forced a three-hole play-off where he was eventually defeated by a shot.
2. Vijay Singh in 2004
Not content with becoming the first Fijian (and only to date) to win a golf major when scooping the 1998 PGA Championship, then world number one Vijay Singh bagged another in the most dramatic fashion.
A final-round 76 – the highest final round of any PGA champion – looked to have lost him a third-round lead before he scraped through a three-way play-off with Americans Chris DiMarco and Justin Leonard.
1. Rory McIlroy in 2012
Having let a four-hole third-round lead evaporate in spectacular fashion the previous year at Augusta, McIlroy showed immense character and pure genius in equal measures to win his 2012 PGA Championship.
Leading Carl Pettersson by three after a weather-affected Saturday, Rory went on to card a majestic final-round 66 to win his second major by a PGA Championship record margin of eight shots.
