Tokyo hot favourites to host 2020 Olympics as London draws nearer

As excitement for the 2012 Olympic Games in London hits fever pitch, preparations are already beginning for the 2020 games, with Tokyo 4/6 favourite to be the host nation.

The Japanese capital has not hosted an Olympic event for well over 40 years, but their past experience in doing so seems to set them apart from competitors for the event.

Amongst opposition hoping to stage the competition in eight years time, Madrid and Istanbul are both 3/1 outsiders.

Neither the Spanish or Turkish city have hosted the Olympic Games before, which is seemingly propelling Tokyo into clear favouritism.

Each of the three cities must present files to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) by January 7 2013, in which they will make their case for hosting the event.

In cutting the initial field of five down to three cities meanwhile, such files were initially presented, and following extensive research from experts into elements such as the cities’ Anti-Doping Codes etc., Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid remained.

Temperatures could play a part in the eventual decision-making process, and with blistering heat the norm in Istanbul and Madrid throughout the summer, Tokyo looks the best bet to host the 2020 games, even as short as 4/6 to do so.
