Tottenham transfer news and rumours

Tottenham’s summer transfer activity under new manager Ange Postecoglou was dominated by the £86m sale of striker Harry Kane.

Kane broke Spurs’ goalscoring record last season but ended his 19-year association with the club by joining Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

Spurs made several high-profile signings, the best of which saw England midfielder James Maddison join from relegated Leicester, while Dejan Kulusevski and Pedro Porro made their loan deals permanent.

After a busy few months for Tottenham transfer news and rumours, we look back at the ins and outs in north London and you can also click on the link for the best transfers of the summer across the Premier League and Europe.

Who have Tottenham signed?

James Maddison (Leicester)

The £40m capture of England midfielder Maddison on a five-year deal proved to be a great piece of business by Spurs.

Maddison’s creativity and versatility boosted a Spurs squad that has lacked a player in his mould since Christian Eriksen left in 2020.

During five largely successful years with the Foxes, who won the 2021 FA Cup, Maddison made 203 appearances, scored 55 goals and produced 41 assists.

Brennan Johnson (Nottingham Forest)

Spurs signed Johnson from Nottingham Forest on transfer deadine day in a deal worth £47.5million.

Head coach Postecoglou made the Wales international his number one target following the departure of Kane in August, signing a deal until the summer of 2029 after bringing his lengthy association at Forest to an end.

The versatile forward made his Forest debut in 2019, following in the footsteps of father David, and went on to make 108 appearances for his boyhood club, scoring 29 goals.

Postecoglou said: “He’s just another exciting young player. He’s a real threat in the front third, he’s different from what we’ve already got, he’s young and ambitious. It’s no secret that’s the model for me.”

Micky van de Ven (Wolfburg)

Spurs made a key defensive reinforcement with the capture of Van de Ven on a six-year contract for an initial £34.5m which could rise to £43m in add-ons.

Van de Ven had been tracked by the club all summer and, after weighing up a move for him or Bayer Leverkusen’s Edmond Tapsoba, Tottenham pressed ahead with their pursuit of the left-sided centre-back.

He started his career with Volendam before leaving his homeland to join Wolfsburg for £3m in 2021.

An encouraging 2022-23 season, in which Van de Ven featured 36 times for the Bundesliga club and captained the Netherlands U21 team at the European Championship, brought him to the attention of several teams across Europe, with Liverpool also reportedly interested, but Spurs won the race for his signature.

He said: “It’s an amazing club. I had a good meeting with the trainer and it was a really good meeting. He’s a really good trainer. I love the club, I love the players and I think there is so much potential under this trainer so we will see where this season heads.

“He has a good view on football. Attacking football is what I love, playing with a lot of space in the back doesn’t matter for me. Offensive football is what I like and I think if we play a lot of offensive football and we train, we train, we train then I think we can do some beautiful things.”

Manor Solomon (Shakhtar Donetsk – free)

Tottenham signed Israel winger Manor Solomon on a five-year deal after he was able to cancel his contract with Shakhtar Donetsk.

Solomon scored an eye-catching five goals in 24 appearances on loan at Fulham last season despite only making his debut in January after recovering from a serious knee injury.

Guglielmo Vicario (Empoli)

Vicario looks set to be the replacement for Spurs captain Hugo Lloris, who could leave in the summer after 11 seasons with the club.

Italy coach Roberto Mancini gave the 26-year-old goalkeeper his first international call-up in September following two impressive seasons with Empoli, although he is yet to make his international debut.

Vicario signed a five-year deal for an initial £17m.

Dejan Kulusevski (Juventus)

The winger arrived in north London on an 18-month loan deal in January 2022, but Spurs have exercised an option to sign the Sweden international on a permanent basis for a reported £25m on the back of some excellent performances on the right flank.

Kulusevski scored and registered an assist on his first start, a 3-2 victory against Manchester City at the Etihad in February last year, and has gone on to net seven goals in 57 appearances for the club.

Prior to joining Tottenham, he played 55 times in Serie A for Juventus, whom he joined from his first club Atalanta following a loan spell at Parma.

Pedro Porro (Sporting Lisbon – £40m)

Porro signed for Spurs on loan at the end of the winter transfer window with an obligation to buy in the summer.

The former Girona right-back joined Sporting on a two-year loan deal from Manchester City in August 2020 and a year later made his debut for Spain in a 2-1 victory over Georgia in a World Cup qualifier.

He scored three goals for Tottenham last season and is already a regular under Postecoglou.

Alejo Veliz (Rosario Central)

The Argentina U20 forward joined Spurs from Rosario Central on the same day as Van de Ven for a reported £13m on a six-year contract.

Veliz joined Rosario Central in 2019 and made his first-team debut in July 2021, making 62 appearances for the Argentine Primera Division side in all competitions and scoring 19 goals.

Tottenham signings:
Brennan Johnson (Nottingham Forest – £47.5m)
James Maddison (Leicester – £40m)
Micky Van de Ven (Wolfsburg – £34.5m)
Dejan Kulusevski (Juventus – £25m)
Pedro Porro (Sporting Lisbon – £40m)
Manor Solomon (Shakhtar Donetsk – free)
Guglielmo Vicario (Empoli – £17m)
Alejo Veliz (Rosario Central – £13m)
Ashley Phillips (Blackburn – £2m)

Who has left Tottenham?

Harry Kane (Bayern Munich)

Kane left his boyhood club in a four-year deal which could eventually rise to £100m.

The 30-year-old striker had been linked with Manchester City, neighbours United and Real Madrid in the last couple of years, but it was the Bundesliga champions that ended up capturing one of the world’s most prolific scorers after Spurs chairman Daniel Levy “reluctantly agreed to his transfer”.

The England captain left the Premier League only 48 goals shy of beating Alan Shearer’s all-time record of 260, but hinted at returning one day in a bid to surpass the former Newcastle and Blackburn striker.

The three-time Premier League Golden Boot winner is England’s all-time record goalscorer with 59, but has never won a major trophy.

He said: “I’m very happy to be a part of FC Bayern now. Bayern is one of the biggest clubs in the world, and I’ve always said that I want to compete and prove myself at the highest level during my career. This club is defined by its winning mentality – it feels very good to be here.”

Davinson Sanchez (Galatasaray)

Sanchez spent six years at Tottenham and featured twice for Postecoglou this season, but joined Galatasaray on a permanent deal for around £12.8m.

The Colombia centre-back made 207 appearances for Spurs following his arrival from Ajax but endured a mixed time, with his last outing for the club a penalty shoot-out defeat to Fulham in the Carabao Cup where his spot-kick was saved.

Harry Winks (Leicester)

Leicester completed the signing of Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks in a £10million move.

Winks, who became the first addition under new Foxes boss Enzo Maresca, progressed through the youth set-up at Spurs to make his debut in 2014 and went on to make 203 appearances for his boyhood club.

First-team chances were hard to come by in recent seasons and Winks decided to help relegated Leicester in their bid to secure promotion from the Championship.

Lucas Moura (Sao Paulo)

Moura returned to his native Brazil at the end of his five and a half years at Spurs but not before scoring in his final appearance for the club in a 4-1 victory at Leeds.

The former PSG attacker missed a large chunk of the first half of the 2022-23 season with a tendon injury and since his return from the World Cup was involved in several difficult moments for Spurs, being sent off in a 1-1 draw at Everton before his error resulted in Liverpool scoring a stoppage-time winner.

Moura’s best moment in a Spurs shirt was when he netted a hat-trick in 2019 at Ajax that sent Tottenham through to a first Champions League final in the most dramatic fashion.

“Wherever I am, my heart will always be here. You are my club,” Moura said on Tottenham’s official Twitter feed. “It has been the greatest honour to defend this badge. Every flick, every tackle, every leap, every goal.

“From the highest of highs to the lowest lows, from the beginning to the end, you sung my name. This has been my dream. This will always be my home. Some nights we will never forget, writing history together. I will always love you no matter where I go. We will meet again.”

Sergio Reguilon (Manchester United)

Reguilon joined United on a season-long loan having spent the previous campaign at Atletico Madrid.

The Red Devils swooped for the 26-year-old Spanish left-back following injuries to Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

A break clause was included in the deal which can be activated in January.

Reguilon has made 52 Premier League appearamces for Tottenham, scoring twice since joining the club from Real Madrid in 2020 on a five-year deal.

Tanguy Ndombele (Galatasaray)

The French midfielder joined Galatasaray on the same day as Sanchez, although his exit is a loan deal with an option for a permanent move.

Ndombele got his wish for Champions League football by signing for the Turkish Superliga side, with this set to be his third consecutive loan spell away from Spurs since he joined in 2019.

He was originally given a chance to revive his Tottenham career upon Postecoglou’s arrival, but an ankle injury in pre-season was followed with poor time-keeping issues that saw the Australian coach give the green light for Ndombele’s departure.
