Nina Carberry is the 15/8 favourite with Ladbrokes to win Dancing with the Stars and she talked to us about her salsa routine and this week’s challenge – the Viennese waltz.

On last week’s performance

Last week I danced the salsa and dedicated it to my two girls. It was probably one of the most enjoyable dances I’ve had so far. I really enjoyed it and I’m actually sad it’s finished and I’ve finished learning how to do the salsa. I really enjoyed the song as well. It was a great weekend and I scored well enough too and yeah, I really enjoyed it.

On the dance-off this week and added pressure

It’s a pity we didn’t gain immunity through this weekend so the pressure is on to try to stay out of the dance-off because it’s then in the judges’ hands and you have to be technically on the mark if it’s in their hands. I’m dancing the Viennese waltz this weekend which is a ballroom dance. It’ll be a bit different again to what I’m used to dancing  as it’s a quick ballroom dance. I think it’s the first one that’s been in the competition so I’m hoping that it will go well.

On being top of the market with Ladbrokes

I try not to think about it too much, just try and do each week well because there is a lot of good competition in there. Ellen Keane has been brilliant every week and literally has not had a bad week. Erica is a phenomenal dancer. I know she didn’t have a great week last week but I’ve no doubt she’ll come back bang at it again this week and get top marks again. There are very good people dancing like Jordan who has been incredible! But I’m going to keep trying and doing my best to keep the scores up and just enjoy it as well.

On her confidence growing week on week

Yeah, I’ve definitely been more confident. That was the most confident I’ve been last week, I don’t know whether it was the dance or I’m just growing in confidence but the dance definitely helps. If you’re comfortable with the dance the confidence will be there. If you’re worried about steps and stuff like that it’s when you get nervous and won’t enjoy it as much.

Did her girls watch her dedication dance?

They loved every minute. They really enjoyed it and they love that song. When they hear that song they want me to dance every time. They associate that song with fun because we used to play it every time we went to the beach last year – they really enjoyed it!

With six weeks left of the competition, what’s going through your head?

Just want to take each week as it comes. I can’t believe I’ve gotten half way already. I never thought I’d even make the second week to be honest! I’m absolutely delighted to get as far as I have. When doing a new dance every week you don’t know which dances are going to suit you or not so just keep trying to learn each dance as well as I can and score high enough each week to stay in the competition!
