How Twitter reacted to Man Utd and Martial beating Liverpool

Punters reacted to Manchester United’s 3-1 victory over Liverpool by second-guessing whether they might actually be capable of a Premier League title challenge after all, with the 20-time champions available to back at 10/1.
With holders Chelsea six points behind them and a further five adrift of leaders Manchester City, Liverpool seemingly out of contention and very few truly buying into Arsenal’s chances, they look as likely as anybody to take the fight to their neighbours.
How did Twitter respond to the events at Old Trafford this Saturday teatime though? For starters, nobody realised quite how absorbing the second half would be following a tedious first 45 minutes, least of all Guardian journalist Barney Ronay:

With Wayne Rooney injured and Anthony Martial beginning the match on the bench, there was an obvious scapegoat for the hosts’ early difficulties in Marouane Fellaini. Gary Lineker showed that you don’t always need 500 words or five minutes of TV time to conduct some incisive analysis:

The second half was where the fun started and, as exquisite as Daley Blind and Christian Benteke’s goals were, it was natural that Anthony Martial’s late solo effort commanded everyone’s attention. It invited comparisons to two very different protagonists of past Premier League title triumphs:

Yet while Martial got the headline and Blind was named man of the match, someone else received Man Utd’s August player of the month award. Hopefully this evocative tweet doesn’t fly quite as under the radar as its subject:

Enough about the home team? Okay, let’s move on to matters Liverpool, where unsurprisingly the leading topic of conversation was whether Brendan Rodgers’ time was up. When the comparisons to “King” Kenny Dalglish come out, you know you’re in trouble:
