US Open Tennis: Williams set for comfortable final victory
Published:Serena Williams’ incredible comeback from injury should be completed this evening when she faces Samantha Stosur in the final of the US Open.
The 13-times Grand Slam champion swept aside Caroline Wozniacki 6-2, 6-4 in their semi-final and is a short 1/7 to win this evening’s clash.
Her chances won’t exactly be hindered by her belief she has nothing to lose after her stunning comeback from a foot injury that put her out of action for nearly a year.
Speaking after her semi-final win, Williams said: “It’s been such an arduous, long road. I can’t believe it. I really can’t.”
“I really feel I don’t have anything to lose. I’ve beaten all odds. Six months ago I was in the hospital and now I’m in the final.”
Meanwhile, Stosur had a trickier time of things in her semi, beating Angelique Kerber of Germany, 6-3, 2-6, 6-2.
She is now the first Australian woman to play in the US Open final since Wendy Turnbull in 1977. Turnbull lost that day and Stosur looks set to do the same against the impressive Williams.
Williams leads Stosur 4-2 in their head-to-head meetings and has an 18-0 winning record on the hard courts this summer.
The American has not dropped a set in her march to the final that has included impressive victories against the likes of Ana Ivanovic and Victoria Azarenka.
It’s hard to look beyond a win for Williams against a player making just their second appearance in a Grand Slam final.
Backing Williams to win in straight sets at 4/9 looks the most tempting punt.
