Westwood good value to top the GB and Ireland stakes

While Lee Westwood’s thirst to finally land one of golf’s landmark trophies may yet go unquenched, at 11/2 placing your pennies on likeable Lee is the way forward in the top GB and Ireland player market.

Westwood may have let yet another Major championship slip through his fingers at the British Open, however, rather than dwell upon what could have been, Westy will simply try, try, try again like he always does.

This is a man who is so consistent in Majors, that regardless of form, he is always included in the PGA power rankings, be it at Augusta, St Andrews or Merion.

The Englishman embodies every attribute required by a golfer to bring success, as his 39 wins as a professional will testify, though remarkably, he can’t seem to scramble over the line when it comes to the Majors.

Nevertheless, as a punter, there is no time to dwell on whether he’ll ever rescue himself from eternal membership to the Colin Montgomery club, instead it’s better just to exploit his consistency.

Tied third position at Muirfield last month represented an incredible seventh top-three finish from his last 16 starts across golf’s traditional big four from the nearly-man of Majors. Aside from Tiger Woods, there are no other golfers on the planet who can claim this level of performance in the sport’s flagship tournaments.

The leader in the top GB and Ireland market is currently U.S Open winner Justin Rose at 4/1. However, as is customary with first-time major winners, it can be hard to refocus for the rest of the season, as a missed cut at Muirfield and reoccurring putter troubles highlighted at the Bridgestone Invitational.

Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy’s recent implosion renders the defending champion barge-pole material here. A good year for his compatriot Graeme McDowell has come a little unstuck too, after posting a 58th-place finish at the Open followed by a 40th at Firestone.

Luke Donald is another one who went completely missing at Muirfield though a much more characteristic top ten at Firestone makes the former world number one possibly Westwood’s stiffest
competition.
