What if the Football League is decided on points-per-game?

Football is entering uncharted waters, as it tries towork out the best way to continue, resolve or void their seasons in the wake ofthe Covid-19 pandemic.

All leagues in Europe are trying to figure out how best tohandle the situation, with roughly three quarters of traditional August to MayEuropean domestic campaigns completed.

In France, the decision has been taken to curtail the seasonearly and decide both the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 standings on a points-per-gamebasis.

This has worked out largely well in Ligue 1, given thatevery side bar runaway leaders Paris Saint-Germain and mid-table Strasbourg hasplayed 28 matches.

So, could this idea work in the Football League?

The Championship

Handily, all sides in the Championship have played 37matches.

Nothing would change under a points-per-game decision, meaning West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United would finish first and second.

Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston wouldfinish in the play-offs, with relegation for Barnsley, Luton and Charlton.

League One

League One is the most complicated of the three divisions,given Bury’s demise before the season began, and Bolton’s delay in gettingtheir campaign underway.

The season is currently mixed between teams who have played36, 35 and 34 matches.

Coventry and Rotherham would be promoted, with Tranmere,Southend and Bolton relegated.

But the play-offs, if they went ahead, would see a change, with Wycombe leaping up from eighth to third on a points-per-game basis.

This would come at Peterborough’s expense, despite The Posh’s vastly superior goal difference.

League Two

All sides in League Two have played either 36 or 37 matches. At the bottom, Stevenage’s game-in-hand on Macclesfield wouldn’t be enough to overhaul a three-point gap on a points-per-game basis.

The only real change of note in League Two would come at the top, where Swindon would jump above leaders Crewe to claim the title.

The two sides would each finish on 69 points, with Swindon top having played a game less.
