What’s next for Roger Federer after US Open defeat?

Roger Federer’s longevity is almost as impressive as his list of titles.
There’s a huge 15-year stretch between his first and most recent Grand Slam triumph. And earlier this year he became the oldest world number one in tennis history at 36-years-old.
Now ranked no. 2, the 37-year-old suffered a surprise US Open fourth-round loss to John Millman earlier in the week.
Millman had never beaten a top-10 player before facing Federer at Flushing Meadows. He’d never even reached the last-16 at one of tennis’ showpiece events before.
The Swiss icon was chasing a record-extending 21st Slam title in New York. But having fallen short, what will he do next?
Despite the shock defeat, he’s far from done. Watching Federer on the court is still one of the great sights in sport. However, there are no more majors left to play for this year.
The next in the calendar is the Australian Open in January, where Federer is 10/3 second-favourite behind Novak Djokovic (3/1).
Federer’s expected to play in the Laver Cup, Shanghai Masters, Swiss Indoors and ATP Finals during the remainder of 2018.
Who knows how long he’ll keep going for? Fans will want to see as much of him as they can. But if Federer plans to continue challenging for the biggest prizes, he may be better served by easing up to make sure he’s in top condition for the new season.
