Hosts England have endured a tricky start to this summer’s Women’s Hockey World Cup. They’ve drawn against the USA and India in their opening two games, and need a victory over Ireland to confirm a spot in the knock-outs.
Ireland have been the surprise package in London this summer, winning their opening two games – and confirming top spot in Group B.
Danny Kerry’s England need to step things up on Sunday. And we take a look at three of the stars who can help them clinch victory at Lee Valley.
Maddie Hinch (GK)
The tenacious goalkeeper – nicknamed ‘Mad Dog’ – was one of the stars of Great Britain’s Olympic title two years ago. And the 29-year-old has continued to replicate those displays for club side Holcombe.
An expert penalty stopper, she saved all four from the Netherlands in the Olympic Final shoot-out. And Hinch has already shown her quick reflexes in the opening two games of this season.
With Ireland in strong form, the 130-cap keeper will have to be at her best again.
Hannah Martin (MF)
The 23-year-old has been a revelation since making her national team debut in February 2017, chalking up seven goals in 36 caps. A quick and creative presence in the middle of the pitch, Ireland will have their hands full trying to stop her.
Following strong performances at this year’s Commonwealth Games, and for club side Surbiton – the rapid youngster is definitely one to watch.
Alex Danson (FW)
Part of the Great Britain side who picked up Olympic Gold in Rio two years ago, 33-year-old forward Danson is England’s talisman and a reliable source of goals.
The Clifton Robinsons player has scored 115 times in 303 England caps, and is a player for the big occasion.
She scored five times for the GB side en route to Olympic glory in 2016, and struck at a vital time in the group stage draw with the USA on Wednesday. Expect her to play a crucial part if England are to get over the line here.
