England v Haiti betting tips and odds

The waiting is finally over as England start their Women’s World Cup campaign against Haiti on Saturday morning.

The European champions have been struggling in front of goal lately and have some key players missing but they are 19/4 third favourites to win the tournament for the first time and 1/66 to start Group D with a victory against the World Cup debutants.

We’ve taken a look at some of the markets to pick out some England v Haiti betting tips for the game in Brisbane and you can read about a history of the Lionesses at the World Cup, five players to watch at the tournament and the thoughts of former Lionesses goalkeeper Siobhan Chamberlain.

Big-hitters missing for Lionesses

Head coach Sarina Wiegman headed to Australia without Euro 2022’s Golden Boot winner Beth Mead, captain Leah Williamson and creative midfielder Fran Kirby and the Lionesses failed to score in their last three games against Australia, Portugal and Canada.

That said, Wiegman still has quality running through the squad  with the likes of Rachel Daly, Keira Walsh, Georgia Stanway and Lauren James set to light up the World Cup.

Their opponents are not in the same league but they beat Senegal and Chile in the inter-confederation play-offs to seal a place at the World Cup for the first time and they are unsurprisingly priced at 100/1 to top the group.

Haiti’s best player is undoubtedly 19-year-old Lyon midfielder Melchie Dumornay, known as Corventina, but a young squad featuring several players that reached the U20 World Cup five years ago should be no match for the Lionesses.

Despite the retirements of all-time leading goalscorer Ellen White and Jill Scott, Wiegman still has a talented squad at her disposal.

James, sister of Chelsea defender Reece, is one of the players to watch at the World Cup and she catches the eye at evens to score as the first of our England v Haiti betting tips.

The 21-year-old forward scored five goals for Chelsea last season, netted her first Lionesses goal in a 4-0 victory over South Korea in February and was in the starting line-up in the last official warm-up against Portugal, so she has a reasonable expectation of starting against Haiti in Brisbane.

At the same price, England to win and under 4.5 goals looks worth considering. The Lionesses are still adapting to White’s retirement and it’s still not certain whether Daly or Alessia Russo will be handed the central striker role.

Haiti are outside the world’s top 50 nations in the FIFA rankings but with the Lionesses in a transitional phase and without some of their elite players, a goal fest is far from guaranteed.

At higher odds of 4/1, it may pay dividends to side with defender Lucy Bronze to outscore the opposition as the last of Saturday’s England v Haiti betting tips.

The Barcelona right-back struck in the 6-1 win against Belgium in February and is a player who likes to get in advanced positions having netted 12 times in 105 appearances for the Lionesses.
