Lionesses 10/11 in Women’s World Cup odds to lift trophy
England remain underdogs to win the Women’s World Cup despite their battling semi-final victory over co-hosts Australia.
The Lionesses are 10/11 shots to lift the trophy for the first time after goals from Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo secured a 3-1 win in Sydney to set up a showdown with Spain.
Sarina Wiegman’s side are 9/5 to win inside 90 minutes, with the Spaniards – also appearing in their first World Cup final – priced at 33/20, while the draw is available at 2/1.
Ella calls the Toone in Lionesses triumph
Toone replaced the suspended Lauren James for England’s quarter-final win over Colombia and broke the deadlock with a clean strike 36 minutes into her second start of the tournament.
Australia captain Sam Kerr, making her first start of competition, equalised for the first-time semi-finalists with a stunning individual goal after the break before Hemp capitalised on hesitancy at the back to put England back in front.
Alessia Russo added another late in the second half to cap off the historic encounter and set up an all-European final showdown against Spain on Sunday in Sydney, where James will be back from suspension.
Russo is the 11/2 co-favourite with Spain’s Esther Gonzalez to open the scoring at Stadium Australia, with Hemp and Toone 7/1 and 9/1 respectively. James is likely to return to the starting XI and is 17/2 to break the deadlock.
Wednesday’s victory means Wiegman will now appear in a fourth successive final as a head coach after winning the 2017 Women’s Euros with the Netherlands, who she managed in the World Cup final defeat to the United States two years later, before she led England to European glory last summer.
