Woods can be top US player but not top overall at Ryder Cup
Published:Tiger Woods is 8/1 to be the top overall points scorer at the Ryder Cup, but the 5/1 that he gains more points than any other US player looks the far superior bet.
Woods has run into a degree of form of late, finishing inside the top 11 in five of his last six tournaments since missing the cut at The Greenbrier Classic.
Three of these finishes have been in the top five, including each of the last two at the Deutsche Bank Championship and BMW Championship to sit second in the overall FedEx Cup standings.
Meanwhile, Woods has a reasonable Ryder Cup record in recent times, finishing as the top US player in each of his last two appearances in 2006 and 2010, sharing the accolade with regular playing partner Steve Stricker in the latter.
Woods is favourite to be top US points scorer again, but it may be a worry that in the last two Ryder Cups, this honour has gone to a captain’s pick.
Dustin Johnson is another player who has been bang in form of late and has the power to tame Medinah, which is over 7,600 yards long.
The course may favour him more than most and he is 8/1 to be the top US points scorer.
In terms of top overall points scorer, punters have to look back to Corey Pavin in 1993 to find the last time a US player solely claimed this accolade.
In the seven renewals since, a European player has topped the points charts on five occasions, with the other two split.
Ian Poulter was the sole winner in 2008 and one of four players, along with Woods, to finish with three points two years ago at Celtic Manor.
Poulter is 7/1 to be Europe’s top points scorer this time.
