World number one Andy Murray’s BBC SPOTY odds continue to fall

The nation sat and waited for Andy Murray to take to the court in Paris this afternoon, knowing that a win against Milos Raonic would see him top the world rankings for the first time in his career.

But it turns out the 29-year-old didn’t even need to break a sweat, as his opponent withdrew from the tournament through injury – meaning the number one spot was Murray’s.

And as a result, our traders have been forced to slash odds of him winning BBC Sports Personality of the Year to just 1/2.

It’s hard to imagine anyone else winning the coveted prize, especially when you consider Murray’s feat today has not been done by a British tennis player since Fred Perry sat top of the pile back in 1941.

That means there may still be some value in backing the Scot to win his third SPOTY gong in four years, despite him being odds-on.

And the records would continue to be broken should Murray win the award, as he’d become the first ever sportsperson to retain the trophy.

All things considered, it’s amazing to think that Murray’s odds were as long as 12/1 just six months ago.

But there are a handful of punters who won’t be complaining about that too much, as they jumped on the Brit back in May and will be waiting to cash in come December.
