Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim now just 1/6 for Liverpool job after Xabi Alonso announced that he’ll be staying at Bayer Leverkusen this summer after a season where he’s almost certain to win the Bundesliga.

Jurgen Klopp dropped the exit bombshell that he’ll be leaving Liverpool earlier this year, and the bookies immediately responded by installing club legend, Xabi Alonso, as the favourite. Now, a few months removed from the German’s announcement, the former Reds’ midfielder has been over taken as the front-runner.

Reliable reports claimed that Liverpool have been aware for some time that Alonso will be staying at Leverkusen until 2025 at least, leaving them without their top target to try and bring to the club in the summer. The news was later confirmed by Alonso in an official club statement, handing one of his former club’s a major blow.

The news will also come as a blow to Bayern Munich, who following the news that Thomas Tuchel will be leaving the club at the end of the season, had viewed their former midfielder as the ideal replacement following his successful time at Leverkusen over the last 18 months.

Previously, Sporting’s Ruben Amorim was the second-favourite for the Liverpool job, but he’s now viewed as the front-runner after an impressive few years in Portugal, with Ladbrokes pricing him as short as 1/6 to take over from Klopp and become the Reds’ next manager.

Next Liverpool Manager betting odds

  • Ruben Amirom – 1/6
  • Roberto De Zerbi – 7/1
  • Julian Nagelsmann – 8/1
  • Pep Ljinders – 14/1
  • Thomas Tuchel – 20/1
  • Ange Postecoglu – 20/1

Amirom (1/6) is seen as the odds-on favourite following the bombshell Alonso news. He’s ahead of the likes of Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi (7/1), current assistant manager Pep Ljinders (14/1), the departing Bayern boss Thomas Tuchel (20/1), as well as Julian Nagelsmann (8/1), who will lead out Germany at the forthcoming European Championships.

In rather surprising news, Ladbrokes has Klopp at just 5/1 to take over as Real Madrid manager and become Los Blancos next boss. Carlo Ancelotti is expected to leave his post in 2025, and the bookies clearly think that Klopp might be the man chosen to replace with Italian when he’s done with his sabbatical from the game.

Before he does leave Liverpool, Klopp will be fighting hard to win the Premier League for the second time in his career. Despite being level on points with league leaders Arsenal, behind only on goal difference, Liverpool are third-favourites to win England’s top-flight come May 2024.

Liverpool under Ruben Amorim

Amorim is seen by many fans and pundits as the perfect man to takeover from Klopp and become Liverpool’s next manager. The bosses share similar ideologies, with both wanting their teams to play front-foot, intense, attacking football.

However, one thing that the coaches disagree on is their ideal starting formation. Klopp has rarely ever played a back-three or back-five during his time as coach of Liverpool, but the Amorim is a major proponent of the 3-4-3, and has taken the formation with him across all of his managerial positions.

The good news is, Liverpool’s team is quite well suited to playing the system, so if Amorim is appointed as the next manager, Ladbrokes takes you through the starting XI that the Portuguese boss could play in the 2024/25 season.

  • GK – Alisson Becker
  • RCB – Ibrahima Konate
  • CB – Virgil van Dijk
  • LCB – Goncalo Incacio
  • RWB – Trent Alexander-Arnold
  • LWB – Andy Robertston
  • CM – Alexis Mac Allister
  • CM – Wataru Endo
  • LW – Luis Diaz
  • RW – Mohamed Salah
  • ST – Darwin Nunez

The new team could see Amorim bring defender Inacio with him from Sporting. The young centre-back would fit the new Liverpool system, and has been linked with the club in the past. The move makes sense too, with the Reds currently without a senior left-footed player for that role.

A notable omission from the proposed side of Dominik Szoboszlai, but the versatile Hungarian has the ability to fill-in for Salah or Diaz on either wing, or even one of the holding midfielders during a game where Amorim feels like his Liverpool side will have high possession.
