Tottenham turn to Defoe for goals as Spurs strikers head for exit
Published:Tottenham’s last piece of silverware was the 2008 Carling Cup, and following last season’s highest ever Premier League finish of fourth place, Harry Redknapp’s men are in the hunt for trophies.
28/1 contenders to win the Premier League title, one of the primary reasons for Spurs’ success last season was the striking firepower of Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch.
England forward Defoe was particularly prolific with 18 league goals, and the 27-year-old is 12/1 to be the Premier League’s top scorer this season.
Of their other strikers, Tottenham have reportedly agreed to let Roman Pavlyuchenko join Sporting Lisbon on loan.
Despite forcing himself back into first-team contention last season, Pavlyuchenko has struggled to make the impact many had expected when he arrived at White Hart Lane two years ago.
Another Tottenham striker, Robbie Keane, also seems to be on his way out of the club, with Fulham chief among a clutch of clubs chasing the former Liverpool player’s signature.
With Keane and Pavlyuchenko seemingly on the verge of leaving, there could be a space in attack for Redknapp to fill with a new signing.
Spurs are rumoured to be battling with Liverpool and West Ham for the affections of Lille striker Loic Remy, who is likely to command a transfer fee in excess of €12.5m.
Tottenham have also been linked with a move for Ajax striker Luis Suarez, and the 23-year-old who starred for Uruguay at the World Cup has expressed his interest in joining the north London club.
