Asmir Begovic closing in on transfer to Arsenal or Chelsea

Stoke City goalkeeper Asmir Begovic wants a move away from the Britannia after the mid-week palaver surrounding his lack of appearance in their Carling Cup tie has failed to evaporate.

Stoke City chairman Peter Coates admits they’ve turned down an offer from Chelsea this morning and insists they’re not seeking to offload their goalkeeper.

The Potters manger Tony Pulis maintains Begovic refused to play against Shrewsbury earlier in the week, but Begovic hit back claiming his mind was scrambled by transfer talk and it was probably best if he didn’t play.

That transfer talk has turned from speculation to solid bids this morning with Chelsea’s interest, but Arsenal are also interested as they continue their search for a goalkeeper and Manchester City are interested if Shay Given decides to leave.

Stoke paid Portsmouth £3.2m for the services of the goalkeeper, but the loss of their talented youngster would be a huge blow as Stoke look to establish themselves as a mid-table club in their third season in the Premier League.

Ironically Stoke head to Stamford Bridge on Saturday and are massive 22/1 outsiders to stop the Chelsea juggernaut and come away with all three points.

Coates is determined to keep hold of Begovic but if the Bosnian is out to impress his potential suitors, then stopping Chelsea’s strike force isn’t out of the question and a 0-0 draw is 14/1.

Chelsea are really strong favourites to beat Stoke and are available at 1/9. See the full Barclays Premier League football betting market here.
