Man United vs Newcastle – Magpies set for unhappy return

Published:

Manchester United have been slow starters over the last few seasons, whereas Newcastle haven’t lost their opening game in five years, however the Red Devils are clear 1/4 favourites to win the first Monday night match of the campaign.

Newcastle left Old Trafford with a point in their first game two years ago but haven’t won at the home of their former title rivals since 1972, which is why it’s no shock that they are 11/1 outsiders.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men have rarely disappointed their home fans in recent years, winning a ridiculous 49 of the last 56 Premier League games that they’ve hosted.

They kept clean sheets in 11 of their 13 against teams outside the top seven last season, while Newcastle have found the net just once on their last four visits. It’s 8/13 that the Magpies are shut out again.

There are plenty of pundits predicting that this will be the season where Dimitar Berbatov justifies his £30.75m transfer fee, and the Bulgarian forward is 4/1 to break the deadlock.

The former Tottenham striker, a scorer in the Community Shield last week, reportedly used to sleep in a Newcastle shirt in his youth but hasn’t shown them much love on the pitch, netting twice against them previously.

If he does strike once more, he’s unlikely to be alone on the score sheet. All dozen matches at Old Trafford since Leeds’ 1-0 FA Cup win in January have featured over 2.5 goals, and that trend is 4/6 to continue in front of the Sky cameras.

Can Manchester United rival champions Chelsea against promoted opposition? It’s 33/1 that they will win 6-0. See the full Correct Score Betting Odds market.
