Roberto Martinez receives backing from Dave Whelan

Roberto Martinez has received a vote of confidence from Wigan chairman Dave Whelan this morning after fans protests reached a new level yesterday.

The Wigan faithful aren’t impressed with their start to the season, Wigan are 4/5 favourites for relegation, and Whelan received written requests from fans pleading for Martinez to be removed from his position.

A 4-0 defeat to newly promoted Blackpool on the opening day of the season, and a thumping 6-0 loss to Chelsea last weekend has left Martinez feeling the pressure and he is currently 6/4 to be the next Premier League manager casualty.

Manchester City’s victory against Liverpool last night means Roberto Mancini is safe for the time being and Blackpool’s start to the campaign has the fans fully behind Ian Holloway.

The other potential candidate, Newcastle manager Chris Hughton, secured some time with his 6-0 thrashing of Aston Villa meaning all Premier League managers, bar Martinez, can sleep soundly at night.

Wigan face an away trip to Hartlepool in the Carling Cup tonight and Martinez will be hoping that his players can justify their Evens price with a performance to please the fans.

The two teams have never met in the Carling Cup but Hartlepool have failed to defeat Wigan in their last nine attempts, however in the 22 meetings these two have contested, they have ended in a draw on ten occasions.

Wigan are low on confidence and a trip to the League One side could prove tricky so the 12/5 available for the draw looks the pick of the market.

The dreaded vote of confidence has been received by Martinez and so take the 6/4 before a tricky tie against Hartlepool. See the full Barclays Premier League manager specials betting market here.
