Europeans prove form in Tour Championship as US team struggle
Published:Jim Furyk’s triumph in The Tour Championship on Sunday may have boosted America’s hopes of victory in the Ryder Cup, but Luke Donald and Paul Casey prove the European form.
Despite only four Europeans competing in the US PGA tour’s flagship event, Donald’s second place finish, and Casey’s fourth placed finish, proved just how strong the European set-up is ahead of the Ryder Cup.
Arguably Europe’s strongest fourballs and foursomes player, Donald couldn’t quite catch Furyk on the final day, finishing just the one shot behind his Ryder Cup opponent, but proved the faith shown in him by European captain, Colin Montgomerie.
Donald has a strong record in the Ryder Cup, winning five of the seven matches he’s played in the Ryder Cup, and is a big price at 16/1 to be the Ryder Cup top point scorer and 8/1 to be the European top point scorer.
Casey, reeling from his Ryder Cup snub, is continuing to question Montgomerie’s decision to pick Padraig Harrington ahead of himself with his incredible form.
The United States team will be wondering how the world number seven, and a man in such great form, can’t even make the European Ryder Cup team, leaving them contemplating the strength of the European line-up.
Furyk and Zach Johnson were the only two of nine US Ryder Cup team members to finish The Tour Championship under par, suggesting the US team are struggling to find form ahead of the biennial tournament they are 8/13 to win the Ryder Cup.
However Furyk’s win will be a boost for Pavin and he is available at 8/1 to be the USA top point scorer.
