Out of contract Leon McKenzie finds a club in Northampton
Published:Northampton Town have snapped up Leon McKenzie after the former Norwich and Coventry striker became a free agent after being released by Charlton Athletic.
McKenzie has joined the Cobblers on loan until the end of the season and Northampton boss Ian Sampson will be hoping McKenzie can score the goals that Northampton need if they are to challenge for the title – they are 25/1 to win League Two.
The League Two side have only found the net once this season and McKenzie’s experience higher up the Football League will be a massive asset for the east midlands club.
Charlton released the 32-year-old after he failed to score in the 12 starts McKenzie made for them, but McKenzie has proven experience at higher levels of the Football League.
McKenzie signed for Norwich in 2003 after impressing at Northampton’s rivals Peterborough and made a significant contribution to the side that won promotion to the Premier League in 2003.
McKenzie formed a partnership with Dean Ashton that season, scoring seven goals, but the pair’s goals were unable to keep Norwich in the Premier League and McKenzie found himself back in the Championship.
His Premier League experience will excite the Cobblers fans and he is likely to play a part in their home game with Southend United on Saturday.
Northampton are 6/5 to win that game but Southend will be looking to maintain the form they showed when beating Torquay last week – they are 21/10 to win.
Northampton will also be boosted by the return of Billy McKay who started in Northern Ireland’s under-21 clash with Germany on Tuesday.
