Phillips could be Blackpool’s secret weapon for survival

Matt Phillips may be the surprise package up the sleeve of Blackpool as they look to prove many people wrong and secure their Premier League survival this season.

Blackpool have made a reasonable start to the season by taking seven points from their opening six games, which includes impressive away victories at fellow relegation candidates Wigan and Newcastle.

However, a bright start does not guarantee that a relegation fight will be avoided as Hull found out in 2008.

After nine games they had collected 20 out of a possible 27 points, but took just a further 15 points over the duration of the season, which proved enough to beat the drop by a single point.

Blackpool are 2/7 to be relegated from the Premier League this season, but Holloway made numerous signings ahead of the transfer window closing to boost their hopes of survival.

One of which was the purchase of Phillips from League Two side Wycombe Wanderers.

The teenager starred on his first appearance at home to Blackburn, making a scoring contribution from the substitute’s bench and Holloway thinks that more of the same is possible over the rest of the season.

Holloway told the club’s official website: “He’s only 19 and he’s someone who I think will have a good future.

“He played in a different role and smacked one in like that. Hopefully there is a lot, lot more to come from that boy because he has got some bits and pieces that would grace any level of football.”

Blackpool will not be expected to take any points from their next game as they travel to Anfield, but they are 9/1 to beat Liverpool.

Blackpool would also be happy with a draw, which is priced at 4/1. See the full Liverpool vs Blackpool match betting odds market.
