The rookies are ready to impress in their Ryder Cup challenge
Published:A rookie is defined as somebody who is new to an activity, but this year’s Ryder Cup rookies are anything but in terms of golfing ability.
Colin Montgomerie may have included six rookies in his European side, but you’d be hard pressed to find two players with stronger games than Martin Kaymer and Rory McIlroy in this weekend’s competition.
Ross Fisher won the 2009 World Matchplay Title and the Molinari brothers together won the World Cup, leaving Peter Hanson as the only traditional rookie and likely to play a bit part role.
But two rookies in McIlroy and Kaymer head the market to be Europe’s top point scorer at 5/1 and with the Molinari borthers likely to feature strongly in the fourballs and foursomes, Edoardo at 12/1, and Francesco at 14/1, offer each way value.
The US side contain five rookies in their side and with the top four in the USA top points scorer market holding poor records in their Ryder Cup, it’s worth taking a punt on one of the rookies to perform the strongest.
Matt Kuchar has been consistently strong all season bar last week’s Tour Championship and is 10/1 to be the USA top point scorer.
Dustin Johnson is highly fancied to do well this weekend, backed in from 12/1 to 8/1 to be top USA point scorer, but his erratic game may prove to be his downfall in the foursomes.
Rickie Fowler has been enjoying his time at the Celtic Manor enormously and the arrogance of youth could be a positive for Fowler.
At 20/1 to be top USA point scorer, he’s a very good each way bet but it depends on how much golf the 21-year-old will get to play.
