Torquay suffer double setback after losing centre-back to injury

Torquay United manager Paul Buckle will be anxiously awaiting a phone call from his medical team today as Mark Ellis is set for a x-ray on his right foot.

Gulls centre-back Ellis had to be helped off after 86 minutes in the 0-0 result with Stevenage at the weekend, a tackle from John Mousinho earlier in the game had left its mark and Ellis’ determination to continue may have made the injury worse.

“It’s painful at the moment and I need to get it checked out,” said Ellis after the game and x-ray’s today will confirm how long the 21-year-old will spend on the sidelines.

Ellis has started all seven League games for Torquay this season and has been part of a defence that has kept five clean sheets in that seven game spell.

A long lay-off for Ellis through injury may cost Torquay in their attempts to win League Two, they are currently 5/1 favourites, but the teams around them are shortening including Rotherham who have been cut from 7/1 to 6/1.

Despite not managing to claim all three points at the weekend, Buckle was able to take the positives from the performance after seeing his side hit the woodwork three times.

“I am delighted with the way we played, and I felt we thoroughly deserved to win the game,” he said, “but we are still a bit disappointed not to get all three points.”

Torquay don’t play again until Saturday when they face Macclesfield in the first of consecutive home games, the Gulls face Aldershot the following Tuesday and Buckle will demand six points from his side.

Shrewsbury and Port Vale currently share top spot in League Two and both are available at 8/1 and 6/1 respectively to win League Two.

The loss of a key defender will see Torquay concede goals. See the latest League Two football betting market here.
