Wigan vs Man City – Mancini’s men out to end Wigan curse

Published:

Manchester City travel to the DW Stadium on Sunday (kick-off 3.00pm) looking for their first ever Premier League win away to Wigan.

Such a record will encourage Wigan, who have endured a testing start to the season.

After a nightmare opening 4-0 defeat at home to Blackpool, Wigan were then humiliated 6-0 by Chelsea at the DW Stadium.

And although they beat Tottenham at White Hart Lane, the Latics’ leaky defence is one of the primary reasons for their unconvincing odds of 4/1 to beat City.

The visitors will take heart from such a statistic, considering that they have failed to score in five of their last nine Premier League fixtures.

Carlos Tevez, however, has scored five goals from his last six Premier League matches against Wigan, and City’s livewire captain is 4/1 to open the scoring at the DW Stadium.

Should Tevez inspire his side like he did when his brace of goals saw them beat Liverpool in August, a City win looks worth backing at 8/11.

Following a summer of upheaval at Eastlands, this City side has yet to truly gel, as exemplified by their disappointing 1-1 draw at home to Blackburn last weekend.

Their 2-0 Europa League win against Salzburg on Thursday, however, suggested that Roberto Mancini’s men are beginning to find some form.

One of the unlikely stars of the midweek win was Jo, the much maligned Brazilian striker who, as a result of injuries to Emmanuel Adebayor and Mario Balotelli, started and scored the second goal.

Jo has struggled to settle at the City of Manchester Stadium since signing from CSKA Moscow for £18m in 2008, but with his new-found confidence, he is a tempting 6/1 to score first against Wigan.
