Published:Katie Waissel enters the X Factor live shows as the most controversial contestant after sealing a space in Cheryl Cole’s top four girls.
Katie was put through by Cheryl Cole ahead of Gamu Nhengu, despite being unable to finish her song after becoming overcome with emotion when performing in front of Cheryl for a place in the judges final four.
The decision by Cheryl sparked outrage amongst the British public and Gamu has since learnt that she may be deported back to Zimbabwe after her mother’s application for a visa was rejected.
That has left Katie bearing the brunt of the public’s anger with many social networking pages set-up asking for people to vote Katie off, including a petition that has almost 12,000 followers asking for Katie to be replaced by Gamu.
Her initial auditions saw Katie gain popularity for her soulful voice and polite demeanour but the X Factor betting suggests Katie could be an early casualty in the show – she is currently priced at 20/1 to win the X Factor.
Katie is the 7/1 outsider to be the girl that progresses the furthest, with Rebecca Ferguson, Cher Lloyd and Treyc Cohen all ahead of the 24-year-old from Harefield, West London in the X Factor betting.
But the longer that Katie survives, and she gained plaudits for pulling off a stunning rendition of Etta James’ ‘I’d Rather Go Blind’ when singing for survival in the first week, the better chance she has of shaking off the public’s perception.
However suggestions in the tabloids that suggest she and favourite Matt Cardle were found in the same bed together, have been denied by Cardle and has seen Katie’s popularity further slip.
