Neuer the man to replace Van Der Sar at Manchester United

| 28.01.2011

Manuel Neuer may represent the best bet at 10/1 to be signed as the replacement for Edwin Van der Sar next season as the Premier League club begin their search for a new number one.

Van Der Sar has announced that he is to retire at the end of the campaign and there are a host of contenders who are in the running to step in.

The favourites in this betting market are the goalkeepers who are currently on Manchester United’s books, but it may be worth taking a chance on a new signing being made in the summer.

Tomasz Kuszczak leads the internal candidates at 7/4, with Anders Lindegaard, who has already been referred to in some parts as the new Peter Schmeichel, available at 5/2.

However, speculation coming out of Old Trafford has suggested that a three-man shortlist has been drawn up, involving some of Europe’s most highly rated goalkeepers.

Neuer is one of these names and he could be the easiest to purchase as financial problems at Schalke could result in them having to sell off their leading assets.

However, such a purchase would probably cost Manchester United in the region of £15m.

Another option is Ajax stopper Maarten Stekelenburg, who has the experience of playing in a World Cup final and could potentially be the cheapest of the three to sign.

Furthermore, Van Der Sar may be able to provide some insight into Stekelenburg’s talents because they are both Dutch and he could be worth a punt at 8/1.

The final member of the shortlist is Atletico Madrid’s David de Gea, who is highly rated in Spain and also 8/1 to replace Van Der Sar.

A £25 stake on Liverpool’s Pepe Reina replacing Van Der Sar would return £300. New customers can sign up here for a free £25 bet.
