Money coming for Van Basten to be next Chelsea manager

Marco Van Basten has been heavily-backed into 3/1 to replace Carlo Ancelotti as the next manager of Chelsea.

Guus Hiddink remains the 2/1 favourite to take over at Chelsea, but there are reasons to believe that he is not interested in the position that he filled successfully on a caretaker basis in 2009.

It is believed that Hiddink is not up for a full-time managerial role and is happy to see out his current contract with the Turkish national team.

However, he may be persuaded into returning to Chelsea in a different capacity, with the role of technical director alongside a younger manager looking more likely.

Hiddink has supposedly recommended Van Basten to Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich, despite the former Dutch striker’s CV not being particularly impressive.

Van Basten could only lead Holland to the quarter finals of the 2006 World Cup and Euro 2008, while he did not even manage to secure Champions League football in his one disappointing season at Ajax.

Van Basten was initially installed at 10/1 in the next Chelsea manager odds after Ancelotti was sacked soon after the club’s final-day Premier League defeat at Everton, but this price has now plummeted.

The big positive in appointing Van Basten is that he is currently unattached, which means that no compensation would be in order and he would be ready to start work straight away.

This is in comparison to Portuguese duo Andre Villas-Boas and Jose Mourinho, who would prove far more expensive appointments.

Villas-Boas is 5/1 to be next Chelsea manager and Porto would surely angle for a big compensation package for their boss, who is certainly in high demand after leading the club to three trophies this season.

Meanwhile, Mourinho is 10/1 and it is certainly a possibility that he will return to Stamford Bridge, assuming that he is on good terms with Abramovich.

A £30 stake on Mourinho being named next Chelsea manager would return £300. New customers can sign up here for a free £30 bet.
