Tottenham in trouble as Modric pushes for Chelsea move

The worst fear of all Tottenham supporters has been realised after their player of the year Luka Modric went public about his desire to not only leave but cross the capital to join rivals Chelsea.

The Blues had an offer in the region of £22 million rejected for the Croatian playmaker earlier this week yet are expected to return with an improved bid, and the former Dinamo Zagreb man has admitted that he intends to go.

He told the Daily Mail: “Chelsea are a big club with an ambitious owner. They have great players and they have ambitions to fight for the title and win the Champions League.

“I want to leave Tottenham as friends. I have enjoyed my time there, but now it is right for me to look at another club…I want to stay in London. I am very happy here and so are my family. I like the city.”

The news that is most likely to hurt Spurs fans given Harry Redknapp’s vow that they would fight to keep him is the 25-year-old’s claim that the board agreed to listen to any interest when he signed a six-year contract last summer.

Modric said: “I have an arrangement with the chairman. When I signed my new contract, he said that, if another club came to sign me, they would consider the offer.”

Redknapp too is sure to be unhappy with the developments having very publicly stated this month that selling the midfielder right now would send out the wrong message about their ambitions to return to the Champions League.

Spurs are 5/2 to finish in the top four next season, a price that sees them fancied less than not only last year’s occupants but Liverpool (evens) too.

For Chelsea however, bringing in one of the most highly-rated players in the Premier League would be a huge show of intent. The west Londoners are 5/2 to regain the title and 7/1 to finally land the elusive Champions League trophy.
