Cameron now just 4/1 to be the next cabinet member to leave
Published:Yesterday we reported a huge gamble on David Cameron being the next cabinet member to leave his post and today the gamble continues.
Having opened at 100/1 yesterday morning to be the next cabinet member to leave, Cameron ended the day at 6/1 following the developments in the Commons after the interviews of James and Rupert Murdoch, Rebekah Brooks and senior police officials.
This morning Cameron is as short as 4/1 to be the next cabinet member to leave and the solid gamble will continue in line with the debate that will rage through the Commons today.
The Prime Minister is expected to issue a statement this morning ahead of a full day’s debate with the Culture, Media and Sport committee, and all eyes will be on Cameron to see how he deals with the pressure today.
Everyone will have their opinion on yesterday’s events but it seems the Murdoch’s have come out of the questioning reasonably intact, and while the police still have plenty of investigating to do, it’s just a mild bruising that News Corporation have suffered.
Brooks’ refusal to drag Cameron into the mix despite a vast number of tough questions from the Commons has also helped the Prime Minister.
Labour leader Ed Miliband has, unsurprisingly, been the strongest opponent to Cameron in the wake of the phone hacking scandal, but Brook’s revelations that she spent more time at Downing Street with Tony Blair and Gordon Brown than Cameron has not helped Miliband’s case.
However this is the toughest test the Prime Minister has faced since arriving in Downing Street and the public will be watching to see how he handles and performs in front of the Commons.
An unconvincing performance and Cameron’s role as PM will be under real threat.
A solid and resolute display and Cameron should have no problems dealing with the rest of the fall-out from the News International scandal.
